Mt. Lebanon claims Positive School award

For the past seven years, Positive Athlete honors student-athletes based more on character than athletic performance. More than $400,000 has been doled out to athletes who have overcome difficult circumstances, given back to their schools and communities, or who just have an infectious positive attitude like the organization’s founder, former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward.
In addition, the foundation selects one institution to be named the most Positive School.
Mt. Lebanon High School claimed the honor for 2019-2020.
According to Mt. Lebanon athletic director John Grogan, the school did not campaign or solicit for the honor. Nor did the school submit any documentation to support its claim.
Mt. Lebanon was selected based on the positive athlete its coaches nominated from their sports.
“We asked our coaches from each team to nominate a student for the Positive Athlete scholarships,” Grogan said. “The organization made the final decision on which school was most positive based on all the nominations they received.”
Grogan added the award certainly came at a good time because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s a really cool thing,” he said.
“It speaks volumes for our district, coaches, parents and community but most importantly our student athletes. It’s an honor to win this award because it speaks to the quality of people and programs we have here,” Grogan continued. “It’s a great district.”
