W&J tennis player named Academic All-American

Nate Wang of Venetia was selected as the 58th Academic All-American in Washington & Jefferson College history by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Peters Township High School graduate was one of just 45 Division III student-athletes and the only student-athlete from the Presidents Athletic Conference honored on the 2020 Division III Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Teams.
A third team selection, Wang becomes the first men’s tennis player in program history to receive Academic All-America honors from the organization. Wang was named Academic All-District First Team selection in Division III District 4 last month.
A biochemistry major with a German minor, Wang amassed a 3.88 cumulative grade point average entering the spring semester. He was a three-time member of the PAC spring academic honor roll. He served as a team captain since his sophomore season. Wang was recently selected as W&J’s male recipient of the Paul Reardon Award, which is presented annually to a pair of junior student-athletes who exemplify excellence in the classroom and athletics.
He has been the top player for the men’s tennis program since his arrival to campus. In singles play, he has registered a 33-5 overall record, which includes a 17-1 mark in PAC play. In doubles play, he has tallied a 29-10 overall record, which includes a 16-3 mark in PAC contests.
Wang was voted PAC Player of the Year and received PAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors following his sophomore season. He earned All-PAC First Team laurels in both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles spots in 2019. Wang is a five-time PAC Player of the Week and a two-time PAC Rookie of the Week.
W&J has produced at least one CoSIDA Academic All-American in 13 of the past 14 years. Wang is W&J’s second All-America selection in the 2019-20 academic year. Senior football player Conor Manning earned Academic All-America recognition in November.
The 2020 Academic All-America Men’s and Women’s At-Large Teams recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom.
The At-Large program includes athletes from the following sports: fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and be nominated by their sports information director.
