Diajha Allen exploded for 21 points in leading Bishop Canevin (19-6) to a 50-41 victory against Laurel (17-8) in the WPIAL Class 2A girls basketball championship game played at the Petersen Events Center.

With the win, the Crusaders advanced to play Bishop McCort (14-11) March 6 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.

Canevin won a state championship in 2013.

The Crusaders have won four WPIAL titles in the past five years. Laurel was participating in its first WPIAL final.

Allen had the hot hand from the start. The senior guard knocked down three 3-pointers as Canevin opened up a 19-15 first-quarter advantage.

With the score tied, 19-19, the Crusaders picked up their defense and forced 11 turnovers to ignite an 8-0 run. Canevin led 29-21 at halftime.

The Crusaders outscored the Spartans, 9-6, in the third quarter and sealed their victory by shooting 8-of-14 from the free throw line in the final quarter.

Bishop Canevin’s Alyssa Police finished with 12 points.

The Crusaders finished 16 of 36 from the field but 5 of 7 beyond the 3-point arc. They were 13 for 22 from the free throw line.

The Crusaders have won nine of their past 10 games. Their only loss in the span was to Chartiers Valley, which captured its second straight WPIAL Class 5A title.
