PIHL cancels remainder of season
Peters Township will not get the opportunity to complete its quest for a hockey championship.
A little over a month after the PIAA canceled all winter championships and spring sports, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League followed suit. The league announced May 17 it too would cancel the remainder of the 2019-20 season.
The league had suspended action March 12 because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.
At the time, the Indians were scheduled to play Seneca Valley in one of the Class AAA semifinal games at Robert Morris University Island Sports Center while North Allegheny was set to battle Pine-Richland.
“The PIHL regretfully must announce that the remainder of its 2019-20 season is now canceled,” the league said in a statement. “This includes all unplayed games in the varsity playoffs. Thank you to all of the players, coaches, managers, administrators and game staff for their valuable contributions to another great year of high school hockey in the PIHL.”
In the Class AA Division, Mars, Baldwin, Hempfield, and Greater Latrobe remained in the playoffs while North Catholic, Thomas Jefferson, Kiski and Indiana were vying for the Class A title.
The cancelation marked the first time since 1975, Western Pennsylvania would not crown high school hockey champions.
