Four years ago, Kevin Lawrence envisioned the moment when Peters Township would bring home trophies in girls golf.

After capturing the WPIAL Class AAA team championship Oct. 5, the Indians added to their collection. On Oct. 26, they claimed a PIAA runner-up title.

“My first year of coaching, we talked about where we could be one day,” Lawrence said. “I thought that we could be a WPIAL championship club and compete at states.”

The Indians were more than competitive in the state finals. They posted a 238 score, six strokes off the winning pace set by PIAA champion Unionville.

“We put up a good number,” said Lawrence. “I thought a 240 would win. Who knew a 238 would be a second-place score?”

Unionville shot a 232 at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Sophomore Mary Dunigan shot par 72 while seniors Charlotte Scully and Morgan Santaguida followed with scores of 74 and 86, respectively.

“Unionville put up an amazing score,” Lawrence said, “but I’m proud of my team. That was about as good as I thought we possibly would play. We did not beat ourselves.”

The Indians triumphed over the weather. Despite the cold and mist, Allison Poon posted a 77. Ella McRoberts carded a 78 and Delaney Kern tacked on an 83.

Amelia Severns and Maddie Weaver also contributed for Peters Township.

“The conditions were not ideal and that may have made it tougher for some girls but mine handled it well,” Lawrence said. “They are used to Western Pennsylvania weather.”

Peters Township has been accustomed to McRoberts and Weaver leading the way. They are the lone seniors on the team.

McRoberts has been the Indians’ No. 1 since day one while Weaver is a program player, Lawrence said.

“I can’t say enough about them and what they have meant,” Lawrence said. “Our success is a credit to their leadership and ability to stick to it. They are a huge testament to what we have been able to accomplish in four years.”

With Kern and Poon both juniors and Severns only a freshman, PT’s future is secure.

“Expectations and hopes for next year and beyond are still high,” Lawrence said. “Delaney and Allison are excellent players and Severns is only going to get better. Plus, we have a nice feeder program.”

“Golf at Peters Township is popular and now that we’ve enjoyed success people want to be part of the program. We’re about producing girls interested in playing and wanting to get better. That can set you apart.”
