Peters Township advances to field hockey final

Peters Township defeated North Allegheny 1-0 in the the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA field hockey playoffs.

Sofia Forlini had the game-winning goal while Sarah Rubican registered the shutout in the nets.

With the win, the Indians advanced to the finals set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Fox Chapel.

Pine-Richland blanked Mt. Lebanon 8-0 to set up a championship rematch with the Indians.

The Rams won the 2019 title. They have won championships in two of the past three years.

Peters Township captured the crown in 2018.

USC forfeits

Upper St. Clair forfeited its semifinal showdown against Penn-Trafford because of COVID-19 concerns.

According to USC athletic director Kevin Deitrick, “someone associated with the team came down with the virus. The school is following all safety precautions, he said. The forfeiture only affected the field hockey team and no other athletic team.

USC’s football and soccer teams are all involved in postseason play. The volleyball team, however, lost its first-round playoff match 3-0 to Pine Richland. The Rams swept the Panthers, 25-20, 25-16, 25-18.

The WPIAL Class AA field hockey championships will be played Nov. 2 at Fox Chapel.
