USC edges Baldwin in section opener

Upper St. Clair edged Baldwin 4-3 in its Section 2-AAAA boys soccer opener on a game-winning goal from Max Fultineer.

After USC’s Jack Myers converted a penalty kick, the Highlanders scored three unanswered goals.

The Panthers rallied to tie the contest on goals by Nick Tanner, on a penalty kick, and Myers. Tanner and Ben Bacdayan were credited with assists for USC.

USC blanked Central Catholic 4-0 in an earlier exhibition behind the goalkeeping of Austin Rees.

Anthony Hays scored twice while Myers and Baden Friday added a goal each.

Bacdayan and Fultineer recorded assists.

The Panthers are coached by Uwe Schneider and his assistants Brett Fackenthal and Josh Turina. Schneider is in his 18th season as head coach. He owns a 273-75-25 record complete with four PIAA state titles.

Bacdayan, JJ Cuddy and Sohum Shankar serve as captains this season.

In addition to Bacdayan and Cuddy, USC returns 10 other seniors and nine starters from last year’s 12-4-2 club. Among them are Jack Cassaday, Fultineer, Evan Jakovac, Cyrus Khani, Ridge McClintock, Myers, Kyle Ralyea, Abelardo Sobarzo, Liam Szajnecki and Tanner.

In addition to Shankar, Will Bacdayan, Hays, Anderson Laudardes and Dev Patel are the team’s juniors.

SF blanks Moon

South Fayette goalkeeper Austin Rees shut out Moon 1-0 in a Section 3-AAA match.

Dan Gormley scored the only goal in the game.

PT ties BP

Peters Township’s Andrew Massucci and Austin Marmol scored goals as the Indians tied Bethel Park 2-2. Alex Grim and Joe Tornari were credited with assists for PT.
