Bethel Park’s Gorman wins section tennis title
Bethel Park junior Mia Gorman captured a section singles tennis title after finishing as runner-up the past two years.
Gorman also qualified for the WPIAL championships and a shot at a third straight PIAA tournament berth.
The District 7 tournament was held Sept. 23-24 at North Allegheny. The top three finishers advance to the state championships set for Nov. 6-7 in Hershey.
The tournament did not end in time to have results included in this edition.
Gorman swept Mt. Lebanon’s Lauren Mastellar 6-1, 6-1 in the Section 4-AAA championship match played at Bethel Park.
Gorman advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Marra Bruce of Peters Township. In her opening rounds of play, Gorman blanked ZZ Rose from South Fayette and Lilly Bosch from Mt. Lebanon by 10-0 pro-set scores.
Mastellar reached the finals by besting PT’s Kat Wang 6-3, 6-2. Wang had been the reigning section champion. Mastellar beat Kelli O’Connell from Chartiers Valley 10-0 and Anna Rush of Upper St. Clair 10-4 in the opening rounds.
Wang outlasted Bruce, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in the consolation match for third place.
As the top four finishers in the section, Gorman, Mastellar, Wang and Marra advanced to the WPIAL championships.
Previously, Gorman finished runner-up in Section 3-AAA tournament. She had been the third-place finisher in the WPIAL for the past two years.
In an all-South Park final, Nicole Kempton blanked teammate Haley Spitznagel in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to claim the Section 2-AA title.
