The Chartiers Valley girls basketball team rebounded one game after its state-record winning streak ended with a 78-52 victory over Oakland Catholic to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in Class 5A, Section 1.

Perri Page led the Colts with 20 points while, Hallie Cowan contributed 18, Aislin Malcolm scored 14 and Helene Cowan added 13.

The victory came on the heels of a 49-42 loss to Trinity. The non-section defeat snapped CV’s 64-game winning streak

The Hillers were no strangers to the Colts. They were section opponents in 2020 and the teams met in last year’s WPIAL championship game. CV defeated Trinity 58-40 in that contest.

The teams are also coached by siblings. This time younger sister, Kathy McConnell-Miller, bested her older brother, Tim.

“The last person I ever want to go up against is my brother,” said Hiller coach McConnell-Miller. “I have so much respect for him and his team, what they’ve accomplished. We feel good about the win, and we know we beat a really quality team today.”

The Colts are three-time WPIAL champions. They won a PIAA title in 2019 with a 30-0 record. CV last lost March 10, 2018, which came in the form of a 57-52 setback to Harbor Creek in the state playoffs.

Chartiers Valley broke the WPIAL winning streak with their 57th win against Hollidaysburg on March 11, 2020, but were denied a chance to capture a second straight state title when the PIAA playoffs were canceled because of the coronavirus crisis.

North Catholic set the previous district mark from 1987-89.

The Colts shattered the state record for consecutive victories Jan. 18 when they defeated Gateway, 91-39. The previous state mark was 62 wins in a row set by Lancaster Catholic from 2017-19.

CV expanded its state record to 64 with a 52-33 win against Penn Hills.

Malcolm scored a game-high 19 points against the Indians, while Helene Cowan scored 12 and Hallie Cowan added 11.
