Upper St. Clair's Dani Prunzik edged out a lunging Paige Drake of Central Valley for first place in the 100-meter dash during the WPIAL Class AAA track and field championships.

The future is bright for Upper St. Clair sophomore Dani Prunzik.

“I’m super excited for the next years to come,” she said.

Prunzik’s 2021 track season turned out better than expected. She missed her freshman year when the 2020 spring sports season was canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’m very happy with how this season turned out,” Prunzik said.

Prunzik wrapped up her first true track season by grabbing two medals during the PIAA championships held May 29 at Slippery Rock University.

She finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a 12.45 time and earned eighth place in the 200, posting a 25.61 time.

Laila Campbell from Spring Grove grabbed gold in both sprints, winning with marks of 11.93 and 24.27, respectively.

Prunzik said she was pleased with her performances. She said qualifying for the finals in both events was “huge” because she didn’t get her best time. She noted she had a bad start in the 100 final and just “squeezed” into the 200 final with a new personal-best time of 25.38 in the preliminary round.

Matisse Gelblum of Mt. Lebanon capped her scholastic career with a fifth-place medal with a long jump measuring 17 feet, 9.25 inches.
