Swimmers shine at East Zone championships

Pittsburgh Artistic Swimming (PAS) successfully competed in its first ever East Zone Championships.

Sixteen synchronized teams from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania competed in the virtual event.

PAS produced nine Top 10 results among its 12 entrants and earned East Zone awards.

Bethel Park team members Ava Arnold, Adelyn Guenther, Grace Mattila and Avry Miller submitted exceptional results.

Arnold led the way with third place in the solo performance in the 16 and over age group. She combined with Miller for fifth in the duet category and finished fifth individually in figures.

Miller took 10th in her division (13-15) for solo show.

Guenther and Mattila teamed up for fifth place in the duet routine for ages 11-12. In the solo category, Guenther was fourth fin the 10-and-under division and Mattila was sixth in the 11-12 age group.

In figures, Guenther finished fourth while Mattila placed 10th.

Deb Hazlett and Natalie Cox from Mt. Lebanon along with Courtly Schmarlzried from Peters Township and Pittsburgh’s Sara Shulgach coach the synchronized swimming club.

Synchronized swimming is an Olympic sport and teams from all over the world will be competing in the Summer Games to be held in Tokyo, Japan. The sport will be highlighted Aug. 2-7.
