Irene Doleno (2) of Peters Township heads the ball away from a pair of Moon players during the WPIAL Class 4A semifinal girls' soccer playoff game.

The Peters Township girls soccer team struck out in its attempt to reach the WPIAL soccer championship game as the Indians lost for the third time this season to Moon, 1-0, in a Class 4A semifinal contest played Nov. 1 at Montour’s Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium in McKees Rocks.

After a scoreless 80 minutes of regulation action and two, 15-minute overtime periods, Moon (15-1-1) won in a shootout, 4-3, to move on to the finals to face Seneca Valley (16-3-2).

In the shootout, Moon goalkeeper Serayah Leech made two saves while Hailey Longwell, Mia Shaver, Kayla Leseck and Eva Molnar converted penalty kicks to propel the Tigers to victory. Leech also made two stellar saves on hard shots by Peters Township’s Jillian Marvin in the final 90 seconds of action in the second overtime.

Goalkeeper Emma Burrows had a great save for the Indians in the final seconds to push the game into the penalty-kick session.

CeCe Scott, Jordan Klein and Brooke Opferman converted penalty kicks for the Indians in the shootout.

During the regular season, Moon blanked the Indians twice, winning 2-0 and 1-0 en route to capturing the Section 2 title. The Tigers finished 10-1-1 in the division while the Indians posted a 7-2-3 record.
