Peters Township runner-up in golf
For the second year in a row, Peters Township finished second in the state in girls golf.
The Indians compiled a 238 score, two strokes off the pace set by Downington East (236), and captured the runner-up trophy during the PIAA Class 3A team championships played Oct. 25 at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
“We are a little disappointed to come so close and lose the state title by only two shots but considering we were the underdog and almost won it all we are happy,” said PT coach Mike Lacey.
The Indians were thrilled to be invited to the tournament. PT received the at-large bid for the championships shortly after losing the WPIAL title to Fox Chapel.
“We were disappointed to not win the WPIAL but excited to hear we got the invitation and the chance to face Fox Chapel again,” Lacey said.
The Indians avenged that loss as well as a regular season defeat. PT finished the 2021 campaign as undefeated section champions at 10-0 and 13-1 overall.
In the PIAA championships, Fox Chapel finished third overall with a 241 score.
Delaney Kern led the charge. She shot a 1-under-par 71. Her round included four birdies, registered on the Nos. 2, 3, 17 and 18 holes.
“It was Delaney’s last match as a senior so it was nice to see her put it all together and shoot an almost perfect round,” Lacey said.
“It was a fitting end for a career.”
Allison Poon followed Kern with a 4-over 76. She birdied No. 2 and 13 to give the Indians a boost.
Poon was a PIAA individual qualifier where she she earned all-state honors and a sixth-place medal.
“Allison backed up her individual showing. She has been very consistent all year. No highs. No lows,” said Lacey.
Brooke Vowcheck provided the final score.
She fired a 91.
Amelia and Sophia Severns also contributed as part of PT’s five-person team that included Chang Yun Joe as the alternate.
PT’s results bode well for the future.
The Indians graduate Kern and Poon but return two freshman, a sophomore and junior from a squad that went to the state finals.
“It’s tough to replace two girls who have consistently shot under-80 rounds. We will have our work cut out for us for sure but we are looking forward to the future. The next couple of years should be good for Peters Township golf,” Lacey said.
