Area girls lacrosse teams will take a respite from battle when they join forces May 2 to raise money for the One Love Foundation.

Peters Township, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair and Bethel Park are teaming together to promote awareness for domestic violence and prevention.

Twenty percent of food purchases from Toss Pizza and Wings, located at 145 McMurray Rd., in Upper St. Clair will be donated to the One Love Foundation. Purchases can be made from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 2.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to bring the players together in a little bit different way than on the field,” said PT booster president Amy DeGurian. “We are rivals out there and we want to win but this is a chance for them to work together, get involved in community and give time and attention to a great program.”

One Love Foundation is a national non-profit organization with the goal of ending relationship abuse. It empowers young people with the tools and resources they need to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and bring life-saving prevention education to their communities.

The foundation was founded to honor the unnecessary and tragic death of Yeardley Love. She was three weeks shy of graduating from the University of Virginia. The former lacrosse player was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend.

“Sadly this is how the foundation was born but not only does it bring honor to her memory it also brings awareness,” DeGurian said. “Domestic violence, like other social problems, is out there and prevalent and not talked about much. This foundation helps get the word out and helps people know where to get help. We want to make sure people have information, education and resources they need to help make this less of a problem.”

Last year, the local lacrosse teams raised $1,500 for the cause. According to DeGurian, the expectation is to double that amount.

“The girls work hard, train hard and play hard but part of being a student athlete is also giving back. These teams and players all share that philosophy of having a sense of community responsibility and this is there way of filling that need.”
