The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) board of directors named Scott Seltzer as its new executive director. The move will take effect July 1.

Seltzer replaces Amy Scheuneman, who resigned earlier this month to become the youth programming director at P3R, an organization behind Pittsburgh’s greatest races.

Seltzer has held the position of president of the WPIAL board of directors for six years. He also served on the PIAA board during that same time. He has been an elected director for 13 years.

“Scott’s knowledge of the league through his position as president as well as his various positions within the league have prepared him to be the executive director,” said Scheuneman.

“Scott’s continual focus on the student-athletes will be beneficial to support the mission of the WPIAL. His visions of structural committees and growth of current initiatives such as the Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Council and Student Leadership Initiative will aid in further advancement of the league.”

Currently, Seltzer serves the Chartiers Valley School District. He is in his 12th year as the assistant superintendent for school leadership. He also served as acting superintendent from 2017-18.

Scheuneman became the league’s first female executive director in 2019 and navigated the WPIAL through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The job Amy did getting us through the past couple years was outstanding,” he said. “There’s no way that I will be able to compare to what she has done for this district and for this league – she will be greatly missed.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be chosen as the next executive director. This is something I thought about for a long time, and to have this opportunity is humbling. I’m not going to be able to replace Amy, but I will do my best to represent the league.”
