Newton leads Upper St. Clair into semifinals
Haley Newton reached a milestone as Upper St. Clair recorded a 22-15 win against Fox Chapel in a WPIAL Class 3A girls lacrosse playoff match.
Newton fired in five goals in the triumph, including her 150th career tally.
Anna Capobres though led the Panthers with six goals. Libby Eannarino followed with four scores and Molly Powell tallied three.
First-half action saw the teams trade goals until the Panthers emerged with an 11-9 advantage at halftime. USC outscored the Foxes, 11-6, in the second half.
With the win, USC moved on to the district semifinals. The Panthers will play top seed Shady Side Academy on May 23 at a site and time to be determined.
In other quarterfinal action, Mt. Lebanon defeated North Allegheny, 16-8, while Peters Township and Bethel Park suffered season-ending losses to Pine-Richland, 12-8, and SSA, 22-10.
In the loss to the Rams, Delaney Kern led the PT attack with four goals.
Lani Filoon provided two tallies while Emma Kail and Sophie DeGurian completed the goal-scoring.
Grace and Emma Kail had two assists each. Abby Neupaver also garnered an assist.
PT’s loss came on the heels of a 13-4, win against Moon in the first round of the playoffs.
In that triumph, Karson Martin exploded for five goals for the Indians.
Neupaver, Grace Kail and Filoon pitched in two goals apiece. Neupaver also dished up two assists.
Kern and Elena Traficante completed the goal scoring. Kern added an assist as did Ella Neupaver. Emma Kail collected two assists.
BP beats SV
A 9-2 scoring run spearheaded Bethel Park to victory, 16-8, against Seneca Valley in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A girls lacrosse playoff match played May 17 on the Hawks’ home turf.
Riley Miller fueled the uprising. The Saint Joseph’s recruit fired in goals with 16.2 and 6.7 seconds left in the first half to provide the Hawks a two-goal cushion after the Raiders had narrowed the gap, 7-6, 33 seconds earlier.
Miller finished with five tallies, three coming during a six-goal, second-half run that enabled BP to pull away, 16-8, with 3:25 to play.
Cailtyn Schultz led all scorers with six goals. Her first four tallies erased a 2-0 deficit and vaulted BP to its first leads, 4-3, and 5-4, in the game. Her fourth deposit also sparked a three-goal run that afforded the Hawks a 7-4 advantage at the 7:27 mark of the first half.
Back-to-back goals by Meghan Krapp capped the scoring spree. Krapp finished with a hat trick, adding the first goal of the second half at 24:48.
Tori Krapp tacked on two goals to complete BP’s scoring.
Sydney Kosko and Ashleigh Manns dominated in the nets. In front of Kosko, Chloe McDaniel, Kaitlyn Wiard and Megan Cunningham excelled on defense along with the Krapp sisters, Miller Schultz and Averie Moul in the midfield. Amanda Lincoln, Carley O’Mara and Madilyn Walters contributed to the attack.
Class 2A
In Class 2A first-round action, South Fayette succumbed to Aquinas Academy, 12-6, while Seton LaSalle dropped a 16-3 decision to Plum.
Behind the goalkeeping of Kaitlyn Kuczinski, Chartiers Valley dispatched Oakland Catholic, 20-4. The freshman recorded her 100th save of the season in the victory.
With the win, the Lady Colts advanced to play Indiana.
