Prunzik secures silver; SF girls grab bronze
Dani Prunzik and the South Fayette girls were the top finishers during the PIAA Track and Field Championships held May 27-28 at Shippensburg University.
Prunzik secured a silver medal in the 100-meter dash. The Upper St. Clair junior clocked a 12.50 time in the race.
Laila Campbell of Spring Grove won the event in a PIAA record time of 11.55. She was .02 off the state record pace in winning the 200 in 23.56.
Prunzik finished fifth in the race with a 24.76 time.
Dea Monz, Melana Schumaker, Amanda Marquis and Olivia Renk combined for third in the 4×100 relay. The foursome combined for a time of 48.76.
The foursome as well as Prunzik were WPIAL champions in their respective events.
Individually, Schumaker secured sixth in the pole vault with an 11-6 mark.
Veronica Vacca from Mt. St. Joseph and Katie Urbine from Solanco finished 1-2 in the pole vault. Both cleared the bar at 13 feet.
Jake Borgesi of South Fayette and Mt. Lebanon’s Caroline Adams earned spots on the podium.
Borgesi was sixth in the 3,200 with 9:07.99. C.J. Singleton from Butler won the race in 8:57.73 while Ringgold’s Ryan Pajack was fifth in 9:06.35.
Adams finished eighth in the 1,600 in 4:57.18.
Mia Cochran won the mile as she swept the distance events, adding gold in the two-mile and the 800 races. Her performances helped Moon capture the girls’ team title in Class AAA.
Although they did not bring home medals, several other area athletes performed well at the state meet.
Among those were: Brett Kroboth from Peters Township, 17th with a PR of 4:19.31; Jenna Lang from Bethel Park, 14th in the 800 (2:18.19) and Kaden Crump, 21st in the boys 800.
South Fayette’s 4×800 relay teams of Emily Sinton, Lily Colombo, Zoe Poe and Lauren Iagnemma finished 15th while the unit of Roman Galioto, Zack Warhol, Tim Danziger and Jake Borgesi placed 17th.
