WPVCA honors POTW

Hufnagel honored

The Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association (WPVCA) named Mailea Hufnagel of Peters Township as one of the its Players of the Week for the second week of the season.

The outside hitter shared the Quad-A recognition with Norwin’s Sara Olson and Jenna Dominek, a setter from North Hills.

In the WPVCA’s recent poll, North Allegheny and Pine-Richland are ranked No. 1 and 2 in Quad-A followed by Seneca Valley and Shaler. Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair follow at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

BP’s Sophie Puzausky and PT’s Lyla Josefoski were recognized at POTW for the third week of the season along with Canon-McMillan’s Gianna Reamer and P-R’s Kaili Doctor. Puzausky is a senior opposite while Josefoski is a junior at the same spot.

In Class 3A, South Fayette is ranked six behind No. 1 Moon. Hampton and North Catholic are second and third.

Bella Bowers, an outside hitter for the Lions, was one of the noted 3A players for Week 2. The senior shared the distinction with Greater Latrobe’s Emma Blair and Lauren Attwell of Mars.

For Week 3, SF’s Ava Leroux shared the POTW distinction with Chartiers Valley’s Kelly Dougherty as well as Latrobe’s Giovanna Jones and Oakland Catholic’s Elena Esquivel. Leroux is a junior middle hitter while Dougherty is a junior defensive specialist.

In Class A, Bishop Canevin is once again the top-ranked squad. Kiera Kozlowski led the Crusaders to the top. The outside hitter was Week 2 POTW.

GIRLS GOLF

Peters Township defeated Upper St. Clair, 159-185, in girls’ scholastic golf.

Ellie Benson shot a low-score of 36 on the St. Clair Country Club course to lead the Indians. Sophia Severns followed with a 37. Brooke Vowcheck (41) and Amelia Severns (45) also contributed to PT’s scoring.

Top finishers for the Panthers were Liz Delo, Natalie Zunic, Addy She’d and Myla Burchill.

The Lady Indians also beat South Fayette,162-176, at Hickory Heights Golf Club.

Benson and Vowcheck both fired 36s while Severns finished with 44 and 46.

In follow-up action, PT defeated Elizabeth-Forward,158-198 at Butler’s Golf Course.

Sophia Severns (30), Benson (38), Vowcheck (40) and Gabby Catalogna (44) provided the top scores.

Bethel Park defeated Elizabeth-Forward, 203-216.

Olivia Willig and Carley O’Mara led the Lady Hawks. Both fired 46s.

Ally Wolling and Sarah Jakel also contributed to the victory.

BOYS GOLF

Peters Township clinched its 20th straight WPIAL playoff appearance when the boys’ golf team defeated Thomas Jefferson, 187-198, on the Lakeside Front 9 at Butler’s Golf Course.

Griffin Hansberry and Austin Malley shot par 36s while Nick Wetzel finished with a 37. Colton Lusk and Nick Haught each carded a 39.

Coupled wins against Baldwin, 191-238, Mt. Lebanon, 189-205, and Bethel Park, 205-215, the Indians raised their overall record to 14-0. They are 9-0 in Section 6 action.

Against the Highlanders, Lusk fired a par 36 while Wetzel followed with a 37. Malley and Ben Miller both finished with 39s while Haught contributed a 40 for the Indians.

Against Lebo, Lusk and Wetzel both carded a 1-under-par 35. Hansberry followed with a 38. Malley and Haught finished with 40 and 41 respectively.

For the Blue Devils, Callan Wilcox fired a 38 while Jack Hartman and Owen Snyder finished with 40s. Charlie Mistretta (41) and Ethan Scott (46) completed the scoring for Lebo.

Against BP, Lusk, Hansberry, Wetzel, Miller and Malley all shot 41s to lead the Indians.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bella Spergel and Brooke Opferman each scored twice while Isabelle Guna added a goal and two assists to pace Peters Township to victory, 6-0, over Baldwin in girls’ soccer.

Christina Sefer scored as well for the Lady Indians while Cam Klein, Sophia Trapanotto, and Atleigh Ciprich pitched in with assists.

Molly Kubistek recorded the shutout in net.

The Indians also blanked Norwin, 4-0.

Bliss Plummer found the back of the net off an assist from Guna and then set Spergel up for another score.

Cam and Jordan Klein had a goal each off of assists from Opferman and Trapanotto.

Kaitlyn Strine recorded the shutout in net.
