Prunzik, Kroboth, McKenna shine in South Hills Classic
In a weather-shortened South Hills Classic held April 1 at Baldwin, several area track and field athletes excelled.
Defending WPIAL champion Dani Prunzik of Upper St. Clair won the 100-meter dash while her teammate Cody Marn captured the gold in the high jump. Peters Township’s Jack Dunbar followed in second place.
Brett Kroboth and Meagan McKenna dominated the distance events.
A PT senior, Kroboth coasted to victory in the 1,600 run with a time of 4:30. USC’s Andrew Hess finished seventh. Kroboth helped the 4×800 relay team to victory in 8:31.33. The unit also included: A.J. Wagstaff, Zach Byers and Caleb Arabia.
A PT junior, McKenna won the 1,600 in 5:22.99. She also helped the distance relay team to a win in 10:30.47. The relay also utilized the talents of Alexis Conway, Mariko Grim and Kaitlyn Strine.
Second-place finishers for USC included Carter Choi and Sadie Tomcyk in the 100 sprints. USC’s Noor El Nokali took fourth and Helena Walker was eighth while PT’s Bailey Koustogiani and Maddie Gawenus followed in fifth and sixth in the 100.
USC’s 4×100 relay teams fared well with the girls winning the event in 51.06 and the boys taking second.
Other top finishers for USC included: Andrew Hess, seventh in the 1,600; Kias Dreher, eighth, 400 meters; Ella Unice, seventh 1,600; Yelena Knobel fourth, high jump; Emily Powell eighth, long jump; and Taryn Kurrawa fifth and sixth in the discus and shot put.
Other top male finishers for Peters Township included: Steven Suchko and Arabia, second fifth in the 400 dash; Adam Cendroski, sixth, high hurdles; Robbie Williams, sixth in the discus and shot put;
Other top female finishers for the Indians were: Kara Liguori, fifth high jump and Kaitlyn Devine, third long jump. Mia Beaumariage, Tessa Hazard, Halley Rist and Marisa Todd placed second, third, fifth and sixth to dominate the pole vault for the Lady Indians.
Among the place winners for Chartiers Valley were: Lily Nixon, second and third in the long and high jumps; Chase Dalbon, fourth in the 100 dash; Hiba Chaouk, sixth in the 1,600 run; Skye Bolling, seventh in the discus; Hevin Harvard, seventh in the high hurdles; Domi Crowley, seventh in the pole vault.
CV’s 4×800 relay secured the silver medal. The team consisted of Rachel White, Eva Kulbago, Katie Hansen and Gia Kwasniewski.
Alexandra Scuillo from Seton-La Salle took eighth in the 400 run while her teammate Danielle Tomley was third in the 1,600 race.
In followup section competition, the Peters Township boys beat Bethel Park, 97-53, but lost to Baldwin, 78-72. The Lady Indians tied Baldwin, 75-75, but lost the dual passed on first-place victories, 11-7. The PT girls also lost to the Black Hawks, 77.5-71.5.
