South Fayette sweeps Connellsville

South Fayette cruised to victories against Connellsville and swept the two-game series to move into a three-way tie for second place in Section 2/5A baseball.

The Lions (10-3) are tied with Peters Township, which split a series with league-leading Bethel Park (5-1, 7-4) and Trinity. All were 3-3 in the section after last week’s action.

The Lions will visit Trinity (4-3) at 7:30 p.m. April 24 then host the Hillers at 4 p.m. April 25.

In a 9-2 road win against the Falcons on April 17, Tyler Pitzer picked up the win on the mound. He tossed four innings, struck out seven, scattered two hits and walked one. Shawn Miller and Gino Satira relieved Pitzer, pitching one and two innings respectively.

Tyler Skeen tagged the only extra-base hit, a double, for the Lions. Pitzer, Christian Brandi, Michael DiMartini, Tyler Schepis, Anthony Diodata and Lucas Cooper had the other base hits.

DiMartini, Brandi and Diodata scored two runs each while Cooper collected two RBI for the Lions, who scored five runs in the initial inning and added three in the second and one in the sixth stanzas.

Skeen and DiMartini combined to shutout the Falcons, 7-0, in the followup encounter April 18. Skeen scattered two hits and struck out five while DiMartini allowed no hits and struck out two in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

DiMartini also fueled the offense. In five plate appearances, he tagged four hits, including a home run and a double. He drove in two and scored two runs.

Diodata and Skeen tagged two hits apiece while Pitzer, Brandi, Miller, Satira and Bayne Misner added to SF’s 13-hit parade with singles. Pitzer also drove in two runs while Cooper scored twice.

BP-PT split

Bethel Park and Peters Township went extra innings in both their section confrontations.

On April 19 at Peterswood Park, Jack Lutte smashed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to spearhead the Indians to victory, 3-2.

Evan Holewinski tagged a two-run roundtripper in the third inning for the Hawks. The homer scored Ryan Petras, who had doubled.

Peters Township responded in the fourth. With two outs, Steve Laurence and Vinny Sarcone socked RBI singles to knot the contest at 2-2.

Sarcone pitched seven innings, scattering five hits, walking two and striking out four, before yielding to David Oberschelp and Laurence, who was credited with the win.

Holewinski was tagged for 12 hits, three by Jack Natili, before yielding to Sebastian Schein with one out in the top of the seventh.

On April 18 at Purkey Field, the Black Hawks walked-off the series opener in the eighth inning for a 5-4 win.

With one out, Petras doubled and moved to third after intentional walks were issued to John Chalus and Holewinski. Petras scored on a groundout to short by Coby Goelz that PT could not turn into a double play.

PT forged a 4-2 lead but the Hawks scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings.

For the Hawks, Jason Nuttridge tagged two hits, including a double. Gianni Magnotti also doubled in the game. Ray Altmeyer, Nathan Vargo, Lucas Lybarger and Joshua Clunan also had hits for BP.

For the Indians, Natili doubled and Carter Shanafelt collected two hits. Joey Bedillion and Nolan DiLucia drove in runs.

Evan Lejeune, Jack Edner and Schein combined on the mound for the Black Hawks with Schein registering the win.

Bethel Park faces Connellsville in a two-game series, on the road on April 24 and at home at Purkey Field on April 25. Both games have a 4 p.m. start.

Other action

Upper St. Clair (2-4, 8-5) split decisions with Trinity in other Section 2/5A action.

After falling 5-4 on April 18, the Panthers rebounded with a walk-off win, 4-3, when Ty Lagoni tagged a sacrifice fly to score the decisive run.

In Class 6A, Mt. Lebanon (3-5, 3-9) blanked Norwin, 10-0, in the series opener April 17. Nolan Smith drove in three run and Matthew Delvaux struck out eight in picking up the shutout.

In followup action, the Blue Devils succumbed to the Knights, 10-2.
