Emily Powell from Upper St. Clair and Jenna Lang of Bethel Park shattered school records during recent indoor track and field competition.

A sophomore, Powell set the school standard and secured the silver medal in the long jump during a TSTCA meet held on Jan. 28 at Edinboro University.

Her record-breaking leap of 15 feet, 7 inches eclipsed the previous mark of 15 feet, 3.25 inches set by Jenna Lynch in 2011.

USC assistants Matthew Cosgrove and Greg Wagner along with head coach Doug Petrick are excited about Powell’s progress as it’s a harbinger of things to come during championship season.

“Often, the indoor season sets a strong foundation for bigger things to come to fruition in the spring,” Petrick said. “Emily is a fantastic ambassador for USCTF. She’s obviously very talented, but also a hard-worker and a great teammate.”

Powell is an integral part of the Lady Panthers’ 4 by 200 meter relay team. Additionally, she has raced the 60-meter dash each week during the indoor track season.

A junior, Lang smashed her own school record by a full five seconds when she clocked a 5:01 time in finishing eighth in the 1,600-meter race at the Spire Invitational held in Geneva, Ohio.

Lang is ranked in the Top 25 in the nation in the race.

She has also qualified for the the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) state meet set for Penn State as well as the Adidas Track Nationals to be held in Virginia Beach, Va.

Lang also gained a berth in both meets in the 800-meter run.
