PIHL all-star games set for Jan. 29 at RMU Island Sports Center

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League all-star games will be played Jan. 29 at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.

Action begins at noon with the D2 clash followed by Class A action at 1:50 and 3:40 p.m. for Groups 1 and 2. The AA all-stars take to the Clearview Ice Surface at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Class AAA clash at 7:30 p.m.

Austin Martin of Mt. Lebanon headlines the Class AAA roster. The senior net minder was named one of the league’s Players of the Month for December. Martin stopped 81 of 84 shots in three games against Baldwin, Pine-Richland and Bethel Park for a .964 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average. Through all games played through 2022, Martin led Class AAA in saves and was third in save percentage.

Martin will be joined in the all-star contest by his teammate Matt Gates, who is one of nine area forwards selected for the game.

Peters Township, which is the defending PIHL and state champion, leads the AAA roster with five selections, four of them forwards.

Ryder Mertens, Austin Malley, Will Tomko and Ben Kovac help anchor the forward unit while Koby Ringwald will play defense.

Upper St. Clair forwards Aaron Stawiarski, Colin Ruffner and Zach Hardy will be joined by Greg Timmons on defense.

All-stars from Bethel Park include forwards Christian Strang and Aaron All as well as defender Luke Henderson.

South Fayette has five representatives in the Class AA contest, including head coach Matt Schwartz.

Wes Schwarzmiller, Trevor D’Alessandro and Tyler Brandebura spearhead the forward line while Brayden Imler will help stabilize the back line on defense.

Brady Nairn and Luke Hinds will represent Chartiers Valley in the Class A Gold game.

Eric Glover from Bishop Canevin will team up with Rick Kalinowski from Ringgold to coach the Class D2 all-stars.

Active players in the game for Crusaders will be Ryan Saginaw, Ty Serakowski and Ben Ondrejko on offense and Mason Glover and Michael Parzynski on defense.
