Peters Township duo help squad to all-star win
Behind single goals from Peters Township forwards Ryder Mertens and Will Tomko, the Blue edged the Gold, 7-6, in the PIHL’s Class AAA all-star hockey game played Jan. 29 at RMU Island Sports Center located on Neville Island.
In the triumph, Tomko also added an assist as did Bethel Park’s Christian Strang. Mt. Lebanon’s Austin Martin made nine saves while facing 12 shots on goal in the third-period stint in the nets for the Blue squad.
PT’s Austin Malley and Ben Kovac spearheaded the Gold offense. While Malley recorded four assists and picked up one goal for a team-high five points, Kovac collected three points with one score and two assists.
Koby Ringwald also represented the Indians. He played defense for the Blue.
Other area players named to the Class AAA all-star rosters were: Upper St. Clair’s Aaron Stawiarski, Collin Ruffner, Greg Timmons and Zach Hardy; Matt Gates from Mt. Lebanon and BP’s Aaron All and Luke Henderson.
In the AA all-star clash, the Blue defeated the Gold, 8-6.
South Fayette had five representatives selected for the Class AA contest, including Lions’ skipper Matt Schwartz. The players included forwards Wes Schwarzmiller, Trevor D’Alessandro and Tyler Brandebura and defender Brayden Imler.
The Gold reversed the outcomes in Class A as Group 1 edged the Blue, 6-5, and Group 2 forced a 6-6 deadlock. Chartiers Valley’s Brady Nairn and Luke Hinds played for the Blue squad.
In Division II, the Blue beat the Gold, 8-6.
Bishop Canevin’s Ryan Saginaw scored twice while Ty Serakowski provided a goal and an assist for the Gold skaters.
Ben Ondrejko also played on the Gold squad.
Representing the Crusaders as all-star selections were Mason Glover and Michael Parzynski as well as coach Eric Glover.
