Emma Dziezgowski of Bethel Park completed a successful year at Saginaw Valley State University on the basketball court as well as in the classroom.

The 5-8 shooting guard averaged 7.5 points per game coming off the bench for the Cardinals, who finished 16-14 overall and 10-8 in the the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Dziezgowski averaged 21.4 minutes of playing time off the bench and scored a career-high 20 points in points in an 80-71 win over Ferris State, shooting 6-11 from beyond the arc.

A 1,000-point scorer in high school, Dziezgowski averaged averaged 18.2 points and seven rebounds a game for the Blackhawks her senior year.

Academically, Dziezgowski earned a spot on the President’s List at Saginaw Valley.

To be eligible for the distinction, a student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 4.0 grade point average.

Softball all-stateSeveral area athletes garnered recognition on the Pennsylvania High School Softball Association’s all-state team.

At the Class 6A level, Deidre Flaherty and Brooke Boehmer gained first-team honors at catcher and first base respectively. Recent Mt. Lebanon graduates, Flaherty will continue her career at Dayton while Boehmer will play at Brandeis University.

At the Class 5A level, Ava Pries from Upper St. Clair earned distinction playing second base. She was named to the all-state’s second team.

Chartiers Valley placed three players on the list after posting a 17-4 record that featured a section banner and a fourth-place finish in the WPIAL’s 4A classification.

Lily Duffill and Madison Crump merited first-team status at catcher and shortstop respectively while Rylee Prosperi was named second team at second base.

In Class 1A, pitcher Meadow Ferri and shortstop Lauren Rush claimed first-team status.

The all-state teams were selected by the PHSCA committee from well over 550 nominations by high school coaches and media members statewide. A first team and second team were then voted on and chosen for each of the six classifications. From this list, overall players and pitchers of the year were chosen.
