P3R offers series for runners this summer

2 min read

Cross country season does not start for a few months but now is the time for runners to train, and P3R is offering two programs to help harriers achieve their goals.

According to Amy Scheuneman, who is the P3R director of youth programming, the series is a way for students to stay motivated, meet new people and train in new ways this summer.

One of the free Learn & Run group events will be held at 6 p.m. July 5 at the Mt. Lebanon High School track. Training tips and recruiting advice will be offered by elite athletes as well as P3R NIL athletes.

Middle school- and high school-aged students can participate in either a 1.5-miler or 5K course.

Additionally, a series event will be held June 28 at Hartwood Acres. A mental wellness workshop, presented by KPEX Consulting, will highlight the session.

P3R in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, will conduct a running clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 27-28 at the P3R Track and Field Complex at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center.

Titled: “Empowering The Teenage Athlete, the clinic costs $100 and a free Brooks Running item is included. Topics of discussion will include: sports psychology, recovery, nutrition, sports performance training and proprioception training.

The Fleet Feet Liberty Mile, Pittsburgh fastest and favorite one-mile timed race, returns to downtown at 7 p.m. July 7.

There will be a RUN Varsity heat just for runners in the scholastic age grouping. Fee is $20.

P3R is the engine behind Pittsburgh’s greatest races and runs. It strives to inspire any and all to run and MOVE.

It is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for all who attend and/or participate in races, runs, events, and programs.

According to Scheuneman, there is a unifying bond among people who love running that transcends social, cultural, political, and economic barriers that typically divide us. P3R takes a stand for inclusion of all individuals regardless of race, religion/religious creed, color, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ancestry or place of birth, disability, marital status, familial status, or genetic information.
