Peters Township begins defense of PIHL title with win over Mt. Lebanon

Peters Township (16-3-0) began defense of its PIHL title defeating Mt. Lebanon, 7-1, in the first round of the Penguins Cup Class AAA ice hockey tournament.

In the playoff opener held March 9 at the Printscape Arena at Southpointe, the host Indians reeled off three, first-period goals before surrendering a tally to Chayce Stasiowski in the final minute of the frame. Callan Wilcox assisted on the Lebo tally.

Austin Malley and Will Tomko led the PT attack.

Malley assisted on Tomko’s first goal, which came 69 seconds into the contest. Malley scored the second tally of the game less than three minutes later. Tomko and Ben Kovac assisted.

Tomko and Malley tacked on additional goals in the second and third period respectively. Tomko finished with three assists while Malley had two.

Zach Palmieri also finished with a pair of goals, coming at 7:46 in the second stanza and at 1:46 of the third period.

Ben Kovac had the other tally for the Indians, who are also the defending state champions.

Also collecting assists in the victory for Peters Township were: Koby Ringwald, Ryder Martens, Wesley Forester, Luca Marietta and Drew Alexander.

In the nets, Kyle Thomas turned back 22 of 23 shots by the Blue Devils. The Indians bombarded Austin Martin with 46 shots.

With the win, the Indians advanced to the semifinals and will face North Allegheny at 7:15 p.m. March 13 at the RMU Island Sports Center.

USC ousts VikingsUpper St. Clair upended No. 2 Central Catholic, 6-2, March 6 at the Alpha Ice Complex in the opening round of the PIHL Class AAA hockey playoffs.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead over the Vikings (14-6-1) in the first frame and never looked back, adding a pair of goals also in the second and third periods.

Aaron Stawiarski led the offensive attack. He record a hat trick and two assists. All three of his tallies came with both teams at even strength.

Colin Ruffner, George Garces and Gregory Timmons supplied the other goals for USC.

Ruffner also managed two assists in the win.

Also picking up points with assists for the Panthers were: Zachary Hardy, Rory Shegan Siniawski and Alex Sarkis.

Louis Liberatore earned the win in the nets. He faced 25 shots on goal, making 23 stops.

The Panthers (12-8-1) advanced to the semifinals in the Penguins Cup playoffs and were scheduled to play No. 6 seed Pine-Richland at 9:15 p.m. March 13 at RMU Island Sports Center.

The Penguins Cup championship match is set for 6:15 p.m. March 20 at the UPMC-Lemiuex Sports Complex in Cranberry.

SF edges FRIn Class AA, South Fayette (16-3-2) edged Franklin Regional, 3-2, on March 6 at the Mt. Lebanon Ice Center.

After falling behind, 2-1, the Lions scored twice in the third period.

Trevor Dalessandro, off an assist from Brayden Imler, scored the equalizer 62 seconds into the final frame.

At the 15:43 mark in the third period, Robert Chiappetta scored the decisive tally. Braydon Reinhard and Dylan Walsh assisted on the game-winning goal.

The Lions had taken the lead six minutes into the game when Dalessandro scored off assists from Walsh and Wes Schwarzmiller.

The Panthers, however, came back with a goal at the end of the period to tied the match. They took the lead, 2-1, midway through the second period on a goal from Luke Anderchak.

Allen Schraeder turned back 22 of the 24 shots he faced in the nets for the Lions, who put 33 shots on goal.

With the loss, Franklin Regional finished the season at 11-9-1 overall. The Panthers were PIHL finalists last year.

With the win, the South Fayette advanced to the semifinals set for 9 p.m. March 14 at the RMU Island Sports Center.
