Collier wins section title
Devin Collier of Bethel Park captured the Section 4-AAA boys’ title and advanced to the WPIAL singles tennis tournament.
The first rounds through semifinals will be held April 11 at North Allegheny while the championship match will be played April 12 at Bethel Park.
After a first-round bye, Collier blanked South Fayette’s Aditya Patel, 10-0, and defeated Mt. Lebanon’s Paul Gorun, 10-5, to reach the section final.
In the championship match played March 29 on Collier’s home court, the sophomore outlasted Ronan Gibbons of Upper St. Clair, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, to claim the title.
A junior, Gibbons reached the finals by dispatching Mt. Lebanon’s Nolan McGill, 10-7, and Peters Township’s Avi Sharma, 10-4. He, too, received a first-round bye.
Gorun took third in the section tournament. The Lebo junior was beating Sharma, 6-0, 2-0, before the PT junior retired from the consolation match.
Other local competitors in the section tournament included: Daniel Wang from USC, BP’s Gavin Hsu, Katt Yattin from South Fayette, PT’s David Lusk as well as Canon-McMillan’s Nick Kubik and Jon Simms.
