USC leads scholastic roundup

Upper St. Clair defeated Mt. Lebanon, 2-1, in Section 2, Class 4A boys’ soccer action.
Ben Murtough had a hand in both goals. He scored the first tally with 14:40 left in the first half to tie the match, 1-1. The junior assisted on the game-winning tally by Jan Sames in the second half.
The win marked the 299th victory in Uwe Scheider’s coaching career. The long-time skipper coached the Panthers to four PIAA state championships as well as a pair of WPIAL titles and numerous section banners.
Previously, the Panthers blanked Baldwin, 3-0.
Joe Donnelly had the hat trick, accounting for all three USC goals.
The Blue Devils also shut out the Highlanders, 2-0, on tallies by Benton Thompson and Aaron Reddy. Ben Bowen and Jack O’Brien assisted the goals.
Peters Township also dispatched Baldwin, 8-1.
Jeven Kelly registered the hat trick while Alex Parise provided a pair of scores. Blake Gabelhart, Logan Peters and Nathan Froelich finished with single tallies.
Previously, the Indians edged Taylor Allderdice, 2-1. Kelly and Brett Martin scored the goals.
Bethel Park also shut out Trinity, 3-0. Ethan Varley, Jackson Friday and Henry Gaston registered the goals. Luke Rubican earned the shutout in the nets. He was backed by the back line defense of Gavin DeClair, Dylan DeClair, Adam Thompson, and Luke Yimin.
In girls’ soccer, USC continues to dominate the pitch. In five games this fall, the Lady Panthers have outscored the opposition, 40-0.
They picked up their fifth straight win with a dominant performance, 6-0, against rival Mt. Lebanon.
Kate Moore posted the hat trick while Sierra Dupre, Abby Mascaro and Ellie Shanholtzer provided single tallies.
Cam Friday and Maddie Webb combined in goal for the shutout.
Peters Township also remained unbeaten, picking up a fifth win by blanking Baldwin, 5-0.
Jordan Klein, Paige Malley, Lucia Trapanotto and Grace Hajnosz scored the goals while Marina Hajnosz contributed two assists. Kaitlyn Strine and Sarah Schweiger combined for the shutout.
Bethel Park defeated Norwin, 4-2, in its home season opener.
Emma Impellicceiri (2), Lexi Tekulve and Olivia Dawson scored for the Lady Hawks. Artemis Conaboy dished up two assists.
Tennis
Peters Township recovered from a 4-1 loss to Mt. Lebanon by sweeping West Allegheny, 5-0, in girls’ tennis.
With the split, the Lady Indians improved to 5-1 overall. They are 2-1 in section action.
Against West-A, Kieran Moorhead, Cassidy Griffith and Neve Zuzek won their singles matches in straight sets. Abbie Segal and Ade Lulich combined to win at No. 1 doubles while Jill Cunningham and Sabrina Dechicchis won at No. 2 doubles.
Against Lebo, Zuzek won her match over Alejandra Garcia, 6-4, 7-6 (5) at No. 3 singles.
Sofia Cunningham defeated Moorhead at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Jackie Tang beat Griffith, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
Sylvie Ericksen and Ellie Tatel swept No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, while Caroline Mackin and Liz Seiffert combined for the win at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-0.
The Blue Devils are the defending WPIAL Class AAA team champions in girls’ tennis.
