Steelers sign Mt. Lebanon’s Tecza
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed former Mt. Lebanon running back Alex Tecza on Aug. 24 as a free agent.
Undrafted in April, the son of Randy and Dana Tecza of Mt. Lebanon previously took part in rookie minicamp as a tryout in May. Though he failed to make the roster, Tecza’s NFL aspirations have now been renewed.
After rookie camp, Tecza returned to Annapolis and was assisting the United States Naval Academy football team, for which he played three seasons.
As a Midshipmen, Tecza started 33 games, rushing for 2,236 yards and 23 career touchdowns. He also had 41 receptions for 451 yards and three TDs. In the fall of 2025, he rushed for 902 yards & 10 touchdowns, with 13 receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Tecza earned second-team all-conference honors his senior year. He was also named first-team all-East as a junior and senior.
Tecza now joins former teammate Eli Heidenreich vying for a spot on the 53-man roster when the Steelers start the NFL regular season on Sept. 13 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Heidenreich, who played at Mt. Lebanon as well as the Naval Academy with Tecza, was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He was the 230th overall pick and signed to a four-year contract with the Steelers.
At the Naval Academy, Heidenreich finished his career with 3,206 all-purpose yards (1,157 rushing, 1,994 receiving and 55 on punt returns). His 1,994 career receiving yards and 941 receiving yards this year are both school records.
In 2021, both Tecza and Heidenreich led Mt. Lebanon to a WPIAL title and a PIAA championship.
