Sept. 5 is Swim Night at PNC Park when the Pirates host the Los Angeles Angels at 6:40 p.m.

Olympic swimmer Josh Matheny of Upper St. Clair is the special guest and he will participate in an autograph session to help raise funds for the USA Swimming Foundation as portions of ticket sales benefit the organization. Additionally, spectators receive a $5 concession credit as well as Pirates-branded Dry Bag.

Matheny excelled at Indiana University and qualified for the 2024 Summer Games held in Paris, competing in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. He hopes to participate in the 2028 Summer Games to be held in Los Angeles.

Recently, Matheny was selected to be inducted into the Upper St. Clair High School Halls of Fames. A USA team member, he recently won a silver in the 200 breast and a bronze in the 400 medley relay during the 2026 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. He is a multi-medal winner at World Championship meets.

DIPG RUN

The 11th annual Superheroes and Warriors 5K run and 1-mile walk will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 starting at Bethel Park High School.

The event is in honor of Joey Fabus from Bethel Park and Sam Levine of Upper St. Clair. Both died after battling Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). The childhood cancer has virtually no survival rate.

Fabus was 8 when he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. He passed away on Jan. 21, 2015 after his battle with DIPG.

Soon after his death, the Joey Fabus Superhero Run Over DIPG was established. Today, it is touted as Joey’s and Sam’s run over childhood cancer because Levine also suffered with DIPG.

Diagnosed in early May of 2024 during his senior year while playing lacrosse at Upper St. Clair High School, Sam fought with incredible strength, courage and heart for 19 months before he died on Dec. 16, 2025. He was 19 and a student at the University of Pittsburgh.

Though Joey and Sam never met, their stories and shared diagnoses have inspired others to maintain their personal fights and have drawn attention to the research being done regarding the disease and to find a cure for DIPG.

Since his death, the Joey Fabus Childhood Cancer Foundation was established to raise awareness about the disease and to raise funds to find a potential cure.

Entry fees for the 5K race are $30 for adults and $20 for ages 0-12. Fee for the 1-mile family fun walk is $20.

Fees increase after Sept. 7. Walkers can register until 8:30 a.m. the day of the event.

Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite superhero costume because Joey was a big fan of the larger-than-life characters

HOCKEY

Registration for Mt. Lebanon’s Learn-To-Play Hockey (LTPH) program has begun. Visit mt.lebanon.org to sign up.

Skaters, ages 4 through 12, with all ability levels can participate in the fall session that runs Sept. 15 through Oct. 22.

Level 1 and 2 classes are offered at 6:40 and 7:20 p.m. Tuesdays and/or Thursdays on the Mt. Lebanon main rink inside the recreation center.

This year, Mt. Lebanon has teamed up with Pure Hockey, which is offering special discounts on orders placed for hockey equipment until Aug. 18. Normal registration (without equipment orders) closes Sept. 14.

Registration is also being held for the Mt. Lebanon Developmental League, which is a noncompetitive, no-check league that is perfect for LTPH graduates looking for more gameplay time without the commitment and competitiveness of amateur hockey organizations.

The sign-up deadline is Sept. 16.

Games begin Fridays starting Sept. 18 on the studio rink for ages 4 to 8.

Fees are $144 for both LTPH and the developmental league.

POND HOCKEY

Mt. Lebanon’s fall session of pond hockey, which features two, 20-minute running timed halves of action on the studio rink inside the recreation center, begins Sept. 2. Adults, ages 21 and older and D-level players, can compete.

While registration has begun for current players, Mt. Lebanon residents can sign-up beginning Aug. 24. New players can start signing up Aug. 25. Visit mt.lebanon.org to register.

Games are played at 9 and 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
