Mt. Lebanon residents concerned that the municipality might not have fireworks for this year’s Fourth of July celebration can rest easy.

The municipality announced it will hold its 2013 Fourth of July fireworks at Mt. Lebanon Park on Thursday, July 4. The launch site will be from the upper parking lot and the viewing area will be near the basketball courts. The fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m.

“We’ve had fireworks in the main park for years,” Mt. Lebanon Recreation Director David Donnellan said. “We felt this was the best option.”

Earlier this year, it was unknown if Mt. Lebanon would have fireworks for the 2013 Fourth of July celebration.

The municipality came under fire for last year’s fireworks display being launched at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery due to construction at Mt. Lebanon High School. The fireworks display closed the area and angered residents who couldn’t visit loved ones buried at the cemetery. The Mt. Lebanon Cemetery told Donnellan it would not allow fireworks to be launched from the site in 2013.

Other options that were discussed were shooting the fireworks from the fairways of holes two and three at Mt. Lebanon Golf Course or teaming with neighboring communities at a site outside of Mt. Lebanon.

Donnellan said there will be very little parking available at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center, and a shuttle service will be available throughout the day from Southminster Presbyterian Church on Washington Road.

The day’s activities start at noon, and will include pony rides, a petting zoo, a miniature train, an obstacle course, food vendors, carnival games and bungee jumping. At 7:30 p.m., the band Airbourne with Jeff Jimerson and Vanessa Campagna will perform.

Rain date for the celebration is July 5.
