Outdoor Classroom named Project WET Host Institution
The Outdoor Classroom in Upper St. Clair has become the United States’ 72nd Project WET Host Institution. As a Host Institution, The Outdoor Classroom will train formal and nonformal educators to teach children and youth about water resources in engaging ways that promote responsible water stewardship.
“We’re excited that The Outdoor Classroom is joining the Project WET USA Network,” said Laurina Isabella Lyle, executive director of Project WET USA. “With its amazing location in the heart of Boyce Mayview Park and established history of helping people of all ages connect with the environment through hands-on learning, The Outdoor Classroom is the perfect organization to teach educators in southwestern Pennsylvania about the importance of water and how best to share that knowledge with their students.”
“Becoming a part of the Project WET USA team enables the Classroom to utilize and offer such a wonderful, interactive curriculum to students and educators,” said Jessica Kester, program manager at The Outdoor Classroom. “Project WET Foundation’s mission and ours are so closely intertwined that combining our efforts to connect with individuals of all ages is a natural step in becoming a stronger resource here in the Pittsburgh area.”
The first Project WET training at Classroom in Upper St. Clair will be held in conjunction with Lyle at the Community & Recreation Center in Boyce Mayview Park, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. April 2-3. A second training will be held in the fall.
The Outdoor Classroom joins approximately 150 other Project WET Host Institutions in 60 countries around the world. In the United States, Host Institutions train educators to use the Project WET program, which includes the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide 2.0, online educators’ portal, the interactive water education website DiscoverWater.org and more. Each year, Project WET USA Host Institutions train about 20,000 educators to teach break down complex water topics using universally applicable science methods.
