South Fayette Police Chief Louis Volle announces retirement

Louis Volle, longtime police chief in South Fayette Township is retiring April 18. It was announced that Volle was retiring at the board of commissioners’ April 9 workshop meeting. The board is set to accept his retirement at the April 16 voting meeting.

South Fayette solicitor Jonathan Kamin said at the meeting the township has been “negotiating a separation agreement with the chief.” Volle has been enrolled in the township’s DROP (deferred retirement option program) for about a year and a half.

The board is expected to appoint current police captain John Phoennik as acting chief at the April 16 meeting.

In other business:

• The Station Street Bridge over Robinson Run in Sturgeon is set to be repaired. No set time has been announced. The bridge is located near the border of South Fayette and North Fayette townships.

• A public reception for former commissioner Tom Sray is set for 6-7:30 p.m. April 16 at the South Fayette Township Senior Center, “to thank him for all his years of service,” said manager Ryan Eggleston.

Sray had served on the board of commissioners for 20 years.

• The board discussed forming a Route 50/Washington Pike task force. Eggleston said because of development in South Fayette and surrounding townships, the task force would look at traffic in that area, especially along the Chartiers Creek Bridge between Bridgeville and South Fayette. Eggleson said he hopes a task force can be formed with Bridgeville, and Upper St. Clair and Collier townships. He added that the eventual plan would be for the bridge to be widened in stages.

• It was announced that the May voting meeting has been moved to May 28. The June voting meeting has also been rescheduled to June 24. Both meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building.
