At an April 16 meeting of the South Fayette Township Board of Commissioners, John Phoennik was named acting chief of police of the South Fayette Police Department. He had previously served as police captain in the department.

Prior to naming Phoennik as acting chief, the board formally accepted the retirement of former chief, Louis Volle. Phoennik starts his position as acting chief April 18.

Also at the meeting, the municipal building was officially renamed the Thomas J. Sray Muncipal Building after the longtime commissioner. Sray, who did not run for re-election last year, had served as a commissioner for 20 years.

“He is definitely an inspiration,” said Ryan Eggleston, South Fayette Township’s manager. “He’s been instrumental in so many things in the township,” Eggleston said.

The board discussed the intergovernmental agreement between the township and the South Fayette School District regarding a school resource officer. Eggleston said a copy of the agreement will be sent to the school district and the officer will be an employee of the township’s police department. That officer has not been named.

Earlier this year, the school district was awarded a grant for the resource officer. Eggleston said the matter is expected to be on the agenda for the school board’s next meeting.

The board also passed a resolution to establish a Route 50/Washington Pike Transportation Task Force. The task force would be made up of officials from neighboring communities Bridgeville and Upper St. Clair to discuss traffic matters in the area.
