4. Mt. Lebanon awards turf contract despite opposition
Mt. Lebanon was faced with a turf war this year – when municipal officials announced a plan to replace the existing, natural turf at its Middle and Wildcat fields with artificial turf, residents and even commissioners were divided. Those opposed to the project held rallies, circulated petitions, posted signs and feared everything from flooding to birth defects would result from the project in an effort to halt it. Supporters debunked the claims, and ground broke in October. At an Oct. 27 commissioners meeting, commissioner Dave Brumfield, a supporter of the project, said, “”A lot of you who haven’t researched this issue as much as we on the commission have probably found it quite frightening. But this is not new information to us. We’ve seen over a dozen studies that have said turf is safe.” He added that it would be up to individual families to decide whether to use the turf.
