Plummer picks SRU

Robert Plummer played both sides of the football at Upper St. Clair but the 6-foot, 235-pound senior left his imprint at defensive end.
Southeastern Conference coaches noticed. He earned first-team all-conference acclaim.
Recently, Plummer turned heads at Slippery Rock University. Though he received offers from Robert Morris, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Mercyhurst, Plummer committed to the Rock on National Letter of Intent Day.
“If you asked people in our conference, they all talked about (Robert) as a defensive end,” said USC head coach Jim Render. “They raved about him.
“Slippery Rock is getting a good football player. He’s a good fit for them.”
Plummer was a good fit for the Panthers. He helped them to a third straight conference championship and an appearance in the WPIAL Quad-A semifinals. USC posted an 11-1 record in 2013.
While a starter on the offensive line, Plummer picked up 35 tackles on defense. He recorded 3.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries and added nine more tackles for losses.
As a junior, Plummer recorded 43 total tackles, 5.5 quarterback sacks, 13 tackles for losses, two fumble recoveries and three caused fumbles. He netted second-team all-conference honors.
“I prefer defensive end,” explained the 17-year-old son of Bob and Linda Plummer. “I like to make big plays and get some glory.”
Plummer is prepared to now bring glory to Slippery Rock, which competes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and posted a 9-3 record in 2013.
“It’s not like the WPIAL wasn’t challenging but I am expecting better competition. The speed of the game will be faster and you have to be better at time management with school and classes,” explained Plummer, who owns a 3.0 GPA.
Plummer, who noted his first varsity sack his junior year against Woodland Hills as his scholastic highlight, plans to major in business at Slippery Rock.
