Not-so-Newlywed Game challenges longtime couples

After 50 or 60 years of marriage, it might be seen as a given that the couples would know everything there is to know about each other. On Valentine’s Day, four couples were put to the test in a game called the “Not-so-Newlywed Game” at Country Meadows Retirement Community in South Fayette.
The contestants in the game were residents of Country Meadows, and one couple worked there. Armand and Lenora Falso participated in the game and have been married for 66 years. Contestants John and Audrey Moore have also been married 66 years and Bill and Ruth Phoennik have been married 58 years. Jack and Joan Egar, co-workers at Country Meadows, have been married 39 years.
Eileen Kutzler of Country Meadows’ corporate office hosted the game.
During the first round of the game, the men were sent to the “green room” to wait while their wives answered some questions about them. Then, the husbands came out and answered the same questions. The couples with the matching answers scored points. Then after that round, the wives were sent to a quiet room and the husbands answered questions.
The questions included one asking the husbands what the couple’s song was and who needed to get the last word in during an argument.
One of the questions that got the most laughs from the crowd of residents was about chicken. The question was “When it comes to chicken, will your husband say he is a leg man, a thigh man or a breast man?”
“We’re talking about chicken here,” Kutzler said as the crowd chuckled.
Ruth Phoennik’s answer regarding her husband was this: “He hates chicken.”
Regarding chicken, it was unanimous and all the ladies said their husbands were “breast men.”
While the women were out of the room, it was the men’s turn to answer questions which included which she likes best, fur, silk, angora or feathers and which side their wives sleep on at night.
Kutzler also asked the question, “What will your wife say is the tackiest thing you’ve ever seen her do in a restaurant?”
Armand Falso’s answered, “She returned her meal for credit,” after eating most of it. That response drew laughter from the crowd.
Jack Egar answered that his wife “ate meat with her fingers,” and Bill Phoennik and John Moore said they couldn’t think of anything.
While Lenora Falso didn’t remember sending her food back, Joan Egar did remember eating her steak with her hands.
Audrey Moore’s answer was not in sync with her husband’s as she said the tackiest thing she ever did in a restaurant was “take my teeth out,” which drew the most laughs of the day.
The Egar’s scored the most points, but since they worked at Country Meadows, the next in line to win were the Phoennik’s, who won a gift card and roses.
“We’re a pretty good team,” said Ruth Phoennik after the game. The Phoennik’s joked that they were the younger ones since they’ve been married for 58 years – as opposed to 66, like the other two couples.
All the participating couples will have the opportunity to go out to dinner as a group – when the weather gets nicer.
