Scott Township commissioners approve goose harassment at Scott Park
Scott Township commissioners voted unanimously to approve a proposal from Integrated Goose Management regarding goose harassment at Scott Park. The 18 month contract, which covers 20 visits to the park, is $2,552.24.
Integrated Goose Management uses dogs, specially designed avian pyrotechnics, and electronics and lasers to harass geese. The company also has sharpshooters that can shoot to enforce as a last resort, if the geese are not responding to the other harassment techniques. The company has to have the approval of the board of commissioners before using shooting to enforce methods.
Prior to the vote, which occurred at the board’s Feb. 25 regular meeting, commissioner Don Giudici said that according to the report Integrated Goose Management provided the board, goose feces can carry a number of diseases, including e-coli.
Commissioner Eileen Meyers commented that it was better for the board to approve a proposal to harass the geese than to get a disease.
Township manager Denise Fitzgerald said that she would contact the Chartiers Valley School District, which is experiencing problems with geese at the middle school, to see if they were interested in partnering in the proposal or if they wanted to enter into their own agreement.
In other business, the board voted to accept the resignation of Charles H. Edeburn from the zoning hearing board, effective Feb. 1, 2014. The board then appointed Brandon Dukes as a permanent member of the zoning hearing board, effective Feb. 1, 2014, with his term to expire on Sept. 26, 2018.
