In its third year since its inception, the Peters Township Education Foundation recently awarded the 2014 Granting Educators Opportunities grants to purchase new iPads for five programs in the district. The grants total more than $6,700 that will be used to support education in the classrooms.

The foundation received 14 grant proposals.

Receiving the grants were:

• Colleen Rooney, Pleasant Valley Elementary instructional support, received an iPad to assist struggling learners in math and reading.

• Linda Diesing, McMurray Elementary classroom support teacher, received three iPads to assist students with difficult reading skills through a program designed to build comprehension and reading.

• Renee Brown, Middle School language arts, received an iPad to integrate the flipped classroom environment for the students. Using the video capabilities of the iPad, she will create interactive videos for the students that will enable her customized classroom time in areas that need to be reviewed.

• The high school counseling department received two iPads to update the College Resource Center, in order to make the students’ access to the Naviance software and other college and career research tools quicker.

• Ashley Vollmer and Kelly Hruby, high school social studies, received five iPads for the 10th and 11th grade social studies classes. The iPads will be used to enhance research skills, to challenge students to create original works on historical topics, analyze and evaluate collaborative work, and to promote student creativity.

In the three years the foundation has been funding grants, more than $23,000 has been awarded at all levels in the district.
