Phone scammers routing calls from Jamaica are contacting South Hills residents and posing as representatives with Publisher’s Clearing House. Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. said the callers are telling residents they have large amounts of award money, but in order to claim the prize, they must first send a check to help cover processing fees. Zappala said calls have been logged in South Fayette township and Whitehall borough. “Anyone who receives this type of call should contact their local police department,” Zappala said. He said the callers are very aggressive, sometimes calling upwards of a dozen times. Additionally, he advised residents to contact their phone carriers and have them block calls from exchange 876.
