Upper St. Clair receives $23k for recycling program
Grants totaling $30,571 have been awarded to Upper St. Clair and other townships for continuing their recycling programs.
Upper St. Clair received the majority, at $23,217, for recycling 2,085 tons of materials.
Township Manager Matt Serakowski said the majority of materials were collected from their curb-side pickup in residential areas, but more than ever is coming from commercial operations.
“We’ve been a little more proactive in that sense – going after materials where they’re not readily given up,” he said. “We’re happy to receive the money to expand our reach and to put more receptacles out there.”
The grant monies must be used to improve the community’s recycling program.
State Senator Matt Smith (D-Mt. Lebanon) announced that four other communities received awards as well.
• Collier Township will receive $921 based on 185.5 tons recycled.
• Edgeworth Borough will receive $1,632 based on 160.5 tons.
• Leet Township will receive $331 based on 58.3 tons.
• Findlay Township will receive $4,470 based on 745.3 tons .
The awards were based on 2012 collections. Applications for the current round of Recycling Performance grants are available online at www.dep.state.pa.us (Keyword: Recycling Grants). Applications are due by Sept. 30.
