State Senator Matt Smith (D-Mt. Lebanon) and Rep. Dan Miller (D-Allegheny) have announced approval for $3.15 million in improvements to Castle Shannon Boulevard in Mt. Lebanon.

PennDOT officials said construction is likely to begin in spring 2015 and last several months. PennDOT crews will remove the brick surface, repair the concrete base, and place three new layers of Superpave course materials. Additionally, new crews will add drainage inlets and upgrade old inlets to help preserve the repaired road. The project will encompass the section of Castle Shannon Blvd. between Washington Road and Scott Road, and also calls for the enhancement of dozens of curb ramps at local street crossings to make the community more accessible.

“Despite a robust local road maintenance program, one of Mt. Lebanon’s busiest roadways was in need of major rehabilitation,” Smith said. “Castle Shannon Boulevard has been a priority for improvement for several years, but the recent state infrastructure investment was necessary to bring this and other critical projects to fruition.”

“Constituents regularly contact me with valid safety concerns and requests for improvement to Castle Shannon Boulevard, but funding was the biggest obstacle,” Smith said. “

“This project is much-needed and long overdue. It will be a major improvement for commuters and residents alike and will contribute to the overall safety of the area,” Miller said.
