South Fayette addresses flooding issues
At a combined workshop and voting meeting on June 11, commissioners in South Fayette voted to hold a public hearing in July to discuss a draft flood ordinance for the township. The update to the ordinance is mandated by FEMA.
In addition, township engineer Mike Benton presented a spreadsheet of areas in the township that are flood prone and have issues with storm water runoff, including areas that flooded badly during heavy rains last July.
“It’s an ongoing challenge,” said Ryan Eggleston, township manager. He said the staff is “trying to compile flooding issues throughout the township.” Eggleston added that there were more than 100 issues in the township. Although some have been resolved, many have not.
“Some longer-term or larger projects need to be done,” Eggleston said. “We are looking at a way to come up with a sustainable program to deal with those issues,” he said.
• The following board appointments were approved by commissioners: Richard McConnell was appointed as an alternate member on the Zoning Hearing Board; Joel Robinson was appointed to the Planning Commission; and Carl Helbling was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board.
• Eggleston announced that Andrea Iglar was hired as a part-time community development director for the township. She is set to start July 7.
• Eggleston said there has been a change in the management structure of the township’s public works department. Sam Tranter, who had been director of public works, is no longer working at the township. Butch Truitt, current parks and recreation director, is heading up both departments. He had done so in his former job in Oil City.
