Lifeguards at Allegheny County pools will offer free swim lessons to children every Tuesday and Thursday, July 1-24.

Kids 5 and older can register day of at pools in Boyce Park, North Park, Settlers Cabin and South Park. Lessons are from 10:00-10:45 a.m. “We approach lessons based on age. For the young ones, it’s getting acquainted with the water – not to panic, how to breathe,” South Park wave pool head life guard Christian Achilles, 23, of South Park said. Age groups are 5 through 8 and then 9 and up.

“Everyone will learn how to tread water, basic freestyle and backstroke. Basically how to stay horizontal in the water and stay afloat,” he said. “If we get to diving, we can teach them that. But mostly, we focus on staying comfortable in the water.”

Classes for individuals with last names A-K will be held on July 1, 8, 15 and 22. Classes for last names L-Z will take place on July 3, 10, 17 and 24. Accommodations can be made if there are schedule conflicts, Achilles said.
