Bethel Park student’s class project makes it around the world
A Bethel Park seventh grader’s class assignment has made its way around the world as a thank you to American service members past and present.
During a recent Bethel Park School Board meeting, Antonio Fontana, a student at Independence Middle School, made a presentation of a poster he created to members of American Legion Post 760.
The poster began as an assignment as part Fontana’s enrichment program class. Students were asked to pick a word and create a computerized poster symbolizing that word.
Vicki Flotta, district director of public relations, said Fontana chose the word liberty, because he wanted to honor his country and remind people not to take their freedom for granted.
He chose the American flag as the poster background, and included photos of other patriotic symbols; two soldiers, an eagle, fireworks, the White House, the Liberty Bell and a mountain top.
The wording on the poster reads “Life without liberty is like a body without a spirit.”
Copies of the poster were sent to soldiers serving overseas through the Bring a Smile to the Service Program. IMS and high school students participate in the program by writing letters to and sending care packages to American soldiers overseas.
Soldiers in Japan, the Middle East, Kuwait and Afghanistan have received copies of Fontana’s poster, said Flotta. In addition, copies were sent to President Obama as well as to the national VFW headquarters.
