Scott salt supply stocked

By Deana Carpenter 2 min read

Scott Township Public Works Director Randy Lubin said the salt supply is “back in a good mode” at a March 11 commissioners’ meeting. He said most of the orders that had been placed have now been received and the township has a good amount of salt.

Lubin added that about $30,000 has been spent so far this year in paying overtime for public works employees who have had to clear the snow – which is about 75 percent of the yearly budget for overtime.

Potholes in the township have become an issue with the freezing and thawing that’s been occurring as of late.

“We know they’re out there,” Lubin said, but encouraged residents to call or email the township to notify them of the exact location of the potholes.

“We are in pothole patching mode,” Lubin said.

Sandy Hallett, a member of the Chartiers Valley Education Foundation’s board of directors, announced to Scott Township commissioners that the organization will be holding a fundraiser on March 29. A night of trivia will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. that day at the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department.

The foundation gives out $500 scholarships each year to three Chartiers Valley High School seniors. It also awards $500 mini-grants to teachers. Last year, five Chartiers Valley teachers received the mini-grants.

“The foundation has been able to support the teachers and the Chartiers Valley students,” Hallett said. Information on the foundation is available on the district’s website, www.cvsd.net.

• Scott Township will hold an e-waste recycling event from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. March 21 at the public works building. Residents can drop off items such as computers, fax machines, printers and televisions at no charge. A fee will be charged for fluorescent lights and batteries.

• The board discussed applying for a grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) for park upgrades. The improvements would be for playground equipment, including handicapped accessible items and also the ice rink. The grant is a 50 percent matching grant and the township will be requesting about $200,000.
