Bethel Park student saves elderly woman from fire
Renno Young was driving home the morning of Oct. 7 when he saw flames and smoke erupting from his neighbor’s home in the 5900 block of McPherson Avenue.
The 18-year-old Bethel Park High School senior was returning home in between classes when he noticed an elderly woman trying to open the garage door of her home with flames shooting behind her.
“I ran up and lifted the door open. She couldn’t walk, so I carried her down to the driveway and laid her down. She inhaled a lot of smoke and then passed out,” Young said.
Young said he then started hearing explosions, and saw oxygen tanks in the garage.
“I went back in and pulled 10 to 15 oxygen tanks out. I figured that’s why she wasn’t able to breathe very well,” Young said.
The fire started around 11 a.m. in the basement. The cause is undetermined.
The elderly woman, identified by Young as Mrs. Kelly, was taken to the hospital in stable condition suffering smoke inhalation and a burn to her arm.
