South Fayette breaks ground on new playground
A new playground set to open by June at Fairview Park is an example of what kinds of projects the newly established South Fayette Community Fund could help jumpstart, according to township officials who spoke at the project’s groundbreaking on April 17.
“Basketball courts, tennis courts, either new projects or improving existing recreation infrastructure-we just need to hear from the community on what projects they’d like to see started,” said township commissioner Lisa Malosh.
The fund has $12,000, of which $10,000 can’t be touched as it accrues interest, according to recreation director Paula Simmons. She said the playground was fully funded by the Parks and Recreation budget.
“In addition to corporate sponsors, we’re looking for community members to make tax-deductible donations to this fund … so it can provide for small-scale parks and recreation projects,” Simmons said.
Parent Deb Whitewood and her 4-year-old son, Landon, drove shovels into the ground during the traditional groundbreaking photo.
“It’s just one more opportunity to get your kids outside. I frequent (Fairview Park) on a daily basis. I’m just excited to see more quality equipment coming in for our community’s enjoyment.”
The playground will be updated and expanded with swings and other play areas after initial installation, according to Simmons.
