Peters Township police charged two people with passing counterfeit bills at two McMurray stores and are investigating the possibility the pair might be involved in similar cases in Washington and Allegheny counties, as well as Ohio, and possibly even more states.

According to Detective Bryan Barbour of the Peters police, Jerome Eric McCullom, 40, of 237 Buffalo Court, Columbus, Ohio, and Jalisa Chakara Curtis, 22, of 1028 Loring Road, Apt. D, Columbus, Ohio, were stopped by Donegal Township police on Interstate 70 near the Claysville exit Nov. 6 on what was described as a routine traffic stop. Police found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, 19 counterfeit $100 bills and receipts from Kmart and Dollar Tree on Washington Road in McMurray, Barbour said.

An hour or so before the traffic stop in Claysville, Barbour said video showed McCullom entering Dollar Tree and giving a store employee a counterfeit $100 bill for $11.48 in merchandise. Curtis, meanwhile, video showed, entered Kmart at roughly the same time, and gave a clerk a fake $100 bill for $24.48 in merchandise. Both incidents were reported to Peters police Nov. 9.

Peters police are charging both McCullom and Curtis with a count of forgery and theft by deception. They have preliminary hearings scheduled for Dec. 29.

McCullom and Curtis were arraigned on the Donegal charges forgery, conspiracy and possession of marijuana Nov. 7 before District Judge Robert Redlinger, who set bond at $20,000 for each. They remain housed at the Washington County jail.
