Bethel Park man accused of illegally collecting unemployment
A Bethel Park man has turned himself in on charges he fraudulently filed for and received over $38,000 in unemployment benefits.
54-year-old Glenn Spohn surrendered at District Judge Ronald Arnoni’s office the morning of Dec. 7 and was released to face a Jan. 26 preliminary hearing. Spohn faces charges of theft by deception and unsworn falsification to authorities, according to the complaint.
In the complaint, an investigator with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office said Spohn was working as a part-time janitor and mail carrier for Alliance Cardiology Group from March 2011 to July 2012, and filed for unemployment benefits with earnings numbers well below what was on his paycheck. The investigator said Spohn filed for unemployment in January 2011 when he reported he made $250 per week when he actually made $500. Then in January 2012 he filed statements saying he made $300 per week instead of his listed income of $750. Spohn was reportedly made aware of overpayments but filed no appeal. In a March 2014 interview with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office, Spohn reportedly said he did not hide anything and had done no wrong.
No attorney was listed for Spohn, who could not be reached for comment.
